You bought what? by Cari Lynn Webb

Kyle Quinn, my hero in my new release, Ava’s Prize-a sweet contemporary romance from Harlequin Heartwarming-is an inventor. Kyle invented a medical earbud that sold for a rather large profit and became a popular commercial product on the market.

I’m a fan of Shark Tank and like to see what ideas people have come up with and what products they have created. I’m always fascinated by the products I never thought of. And equally fascinated that some of the products I like, the Shark Tank turns down. And other products I don’t think are marketable, the Shark Tank bids on and invests in. I have been known to Google products while watching Shark Tank to see if they are still on the market and available to buy. Two things I’ve taken away from the show – some of the most simple ideas are the best. And the products that fill a real need and offer a new solution seem to be the most successful.

However, the success of some inventions cannot be explained. Here are my favorite craziest inventions that sold and found huge success.

1.       The Snuggie. This is the blanket with sleeves. Perfect for readers who stay up late at night reading and want to keep their arms and shoulders warm. It’s both a simple concept and genius at the same time. I don’t have one yet, but I know several people who swear by their Snuggies.

2.       The Pet Rock invented by Gary Dahl and described as the perfect pet. It doesn’t need food, water, attention or care. Even better, the original pet rock shipped in a cardboard box that looked like a pet carrier. This one makes me smile and stumps me as I wonder: who would by that? And then I ask myself: why didn’t I think of that 😊

3.       The Flowbee. It’s the vacuum that cuts hair or vacuums up the hair as you cut it. I’m not entirely sure, but the idea is great for anyone willing to take on their own haircuts. I was a kid when this came on the market, but I have three brothers who I thought would’ve been perfect to try it. I need to ask them if our Dad ever used a Flowbee on them. The Flowbee is still available to purchase today. Let me know how it works.

4.       The Magic 8 Ball. What could be better than a ball that has the answers to all of life’s questions and offers advice. We had one of these when I was a kid. I still remember it and smile every time I see one now.

5.       Doggles. These are tinted goggles that protect a dog’s eyes. I saw a Great Dane in a convertible wearing a pair of doggles while visiting Banff, Canada. He was too cute. One of the interesting things about doggles is that they are more than a fashion trend. These goggles have shielded the eyes of US dogs in uniform. Now that’s an idea I can really get behind.

What wild inventions have you bought?

Happy Reading!
